Day trips from the coast
One of the joys of The Gambia is how much you can see on a single day out from a coastal base. Distances are short, and a well-chosen day trip adds wildlife, culture, or history without giving up your beach. Here are the outings that come up most often, with a sense of what each involves.
Culture and capital
- Banjul. A half-day in the capital: Albert Market, Arch 22, the National Museum, and the working waterfront.
- Serrekunda. The country's biggest market and most authentic urban energy, minutes inland.
- Brikama and Makasutu. The craft town plus the Makasutu Culture Forest, with guided walks and canoe trips.
Nature and wildlife
- Abuko Nature Reserve. A compact forest reserve close to the coast — birds, monkeys, and an easy introduction to Gambian wildlife.
- Bijilo Forest Park. A short coastal-forest loop known for its monkeys.
- Lamin Lodge and the mangroves. Creek and mangrove trips from a rustic riverside lodge near Lamin.
- Kachikally Crocodile Pool. The sacred pool in Bakau.
Coast and fishing villages
- Tanji. The fishing village, market, and bird reserve.
- Sanyang (Paradise Beach). Wide southern sands for a relaxed beach day — see the beaches guide.
- Kartong. The quiet southern tip, reptile farm, and river mouth.
History by river
A boat trip to Juffureh, Albreda, and Kunta Kinteh Island is the classic heritage day trip, tracing the trans-Atlantic history of the river. It is a longer outing — most of a day — and best done with a knowledgeable guide.
Planning your day
- Start early to beat the midday heat, especially for wildlife.
- Agree transport and guide rates in advance — see money and payments.
- Carry water, sun protection, and small cash for entry and community fees.
- Match the trip to the day: markets and culture when it's hot, nature early.
